The lines on this invoice, and why

LineWhat it tells your client
Brand identityThe project fee as quoted, with what was delivered: the logo suite, palette, type, guidelines. Name the revision rounds it included.
Extra revision roundRounds beyond the agreement, at your hourly rate, with the date they were asked for.
Stock image licenseFonts and stock bought for the client, at cost, one line each. The client should know they own a license, and which one.

Take the deposit off the final invoice

Most designers take a third to a half up front. On the final invoice, enter the deposit as already paid: the total still shows the whole project, and the balance shows what's left to pay.

Usage rights move on payment

Say that the final files and usage rights transfer when the invoice is paid in full. It's standard in design agreements and the strongest reason a client has to pay on time.

Name your revision rounds

"Two rounds included" on the quote and "third round" on the invoice avoids the argument. AIGA's standard agreement also sets a late charge of 1.5% a month, or the most your state allows.

Questions

How much should a graphic designer charge up front?

A third to a half is the usual range; 50% is common for small projects, and larger ones split into three payments.

Should I invoice hourly or per project?

Per project for defined work like a logo or a brand system, hourly for open-ended work and extra revision rounds.

Do I charge sales tax on design?

It depends on the state and on what you deliver: digital files and printed goods are taxed differently. Check your state's rules.
