The lines on a lawn care invoice
| Line | Why it's there |
|---|---|
| Mow, trim and blow: date | One line per visit. "Did you come on the 16th?" Answered. |
| Skipped: date | Rain or a request, at no charge, or your route-slot price if the agreement says so. |
| Treatment: date | Area, time, applicator and license, the product and its EPA registration number. Several states require it. |
| Sales tax | Some states tax lawn care; Wisconsin does. Mark only the taxed lines. |
Per cut, monthly or level billing
Bill each month's visits, like this sample, or split the season into equal monthly payments and settle up at the end. Say which in your terms: twelve installments of a package aren't twelve separate months if a customer cancels.
Treatments leave a paper trail
Wisconsin, Massachusetts and New York expect customers to get the application details: who applied it, when, where, the product and its EPA registration number. Most companies put them on the invoice.
Landscaping installs
Sod, pavers, plantings: quote them, take a deposit for materials, invoice the balance when it's done.

Questions
Should I invoice after every mow?
You can, but most customers prefer one invoice a month that lists each visit.
Do I charge sales tax on lawn care?
It depends on the state. Wisconsin taxes mowing and fertilizing; many states don't tax lawn care at all.
What goes on a landscaping invoice?
Your business and the customer's, the property address, each job or visit with its date, materials, any deposit taken off, tax where it applies, the total and the due date.
